FLORIDA GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE

Florida large group health insurance (Groups of 51+)

Large groups are companies with 51 or more eligible employees. These are employees who have completed their company's waiting period and work more than 30 hours per week. Large group health insurance is not guaranteed issue. They are underwritten (the insurance company medically determines if this is a group the will insure). Rates will vary depending the health of the group and the company insuring the group.

Past claims history will also be used in helping the insurance company determine a rate for each group. Usually the higher the claims the higher the rates a company will charge the group.

Florida small group health insurance (Groups of 10+)

This size group has a self-funding option available along with the Florida group health insurance guaranteed issue option. Both plans have a PPO plan option. The self-funded plans are underwritten (they look at the health of the group similar to the large group) with normally low rates. There is a catch. The group has to be relatively healthy, in other words few to average claims on an annual basis. If this applies to your company, you can save thousands of premium dollars annually and even get a premium refund if claims go well during the year.

If your group has some employees with some health issues you can obtain guaranteed issue Florida group health insurance mandated by the state. With few exceptions, small employers (1 to 50) cannot be turned down.

Florida group health insurance (Groups of 4 to 50)

There are HMOs, PPOs and other plans to choose from. All plans that fall under the Florida group health insurance small group plans are guaranteed issue. Meaning that the insurance carrier must take you regardless of health of the group. The premium will be higher than plans that are medically underwritten because they have to take everyone.

If you have a preexisting condition that is covered under your current plan and you move to another group plan, then that condition will be covered. If you have no current coverage for the preexisting condition then you will have to wait 12 months to have the condition covered. Additionally there are over 50 Florida State mandates (conditions group insurance is required to cover) on group insurance.

Florida group health insurance (Groups of 1-3)

This area of Florida group health insurance still has the guaranteed issue plans. The coverages offered and open enrollment periods to obtain these plans, are very limited.

Groups of one have an open enrollment once a year in August for an October effective date.

Groups of 2-3 can apply during any month of the year for a following month effective date.
